The name may sound familiar because it's used by many teams working on experimental VR functionality and hardware (including years of focusing on 3D space audio in the Seattle office).

Facebook explained that the reason for the renaming was to "build the next computing platform to help people feel each other's presence even when they are apart." This sounds like an admission to the so-called "Facebook operating system," whose core is virtual reality, mixed reality and smartphone cameras. Facebook has been hinting for months that it will integrate hybrid computing systems in the workplace, as the company concludes in a new post at Facebook VR lab.
